Boiler making strange noises: what they may mean

A new or worsening boiler noise deserves attention, but sound alone rarely identifies the fault. Record when it happens, check visible readings and keep clear of internal components.

Describe the sound and timing

  • Banging or knocking when heating starts
  • Whistling while the appliance runs
  • Gurgling in the boiler, pipes or radiators
  • Humming, buzzing or vibration
  • Whether the sound coincides with a fault code, pressure change, leak or loss of heat

Possible explanations

Water flow, trapped air, pressure, deposits, a pump or another moving component can all affect sound. Vibration may also travel through nearby pipework or panels. These are broad possibilities, not a diagnosis.

Keep observations safe

  • Do not remove the boiler casing, bypass a control or try to reach an internal component.
  • Do not repeatedly reset a boiler that locks out.
  • Stop using it and seek urgent advice if there is leaking water near electrics, burning, fumes or another sign it may be unsafe.

When to contact an engineer

Arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer for persistent, loud or changing boiler noises, particularly with poor heating, falling pressure, leaks or fault codes. If you smell gas, follow the established emergency advice: ventilate, avoid switches and flames, leave if needed, and call 0800 111 999.
