Boiler pressure too high: what to do

Persistently high boiler pressure can discharge water or stop the appliance and may involve overfilling, expansion control or another fault.

Likely causes

  • An overfilled system, filling-loop issue or failed expansion vessel can raise pressure.

Safe checks you can make

  • Note cold and hot readings and whether water exits an external pressure-relief pipe.
  • Use only normal controls covered by the exact boiler instructions.

When to stop and get urgent help

  • Turn off the appliance and seek advice if pressure enters the marked danger zone, water discharges or leaks appear.

How a Gas Safe registered engineer can help

  • A Gas Safe registered engineer can safely test the filling arrangement, vessel and relief components.
