How much does a photographer cost in the UK?
There is no single meaningful UK price for photography. A short portrait session, a full wedding day and a commercial campaign involve very different time, equipment, editing and rights. A useful quote makes those differences visible.
Why quotes vary
- Type and complexity of the photography
- Time on site, preparation and travel
- Location costs, assistants, lighting or specialist equipment
- Selection, colour work and detailed retouching after the shoot
- Number, size and format of finished images
- Albums, prints or other physical products
- How the images may be used and for how long
The type of work changes the scope
Wedding and event quotes often centre on coverage time and final galleries. Portrait work may be structured as a session plus products or files. Commercial work can include planning, production and licensing as well as the shoot itself. Compare each quote against your actual use rather than a general day rate.
What a clear quote should tell you
- Exactly how much shooting time is included
- Travel and any other expenses
- What editing or retouching is included
- An expected range or definition of deliverables
- Delivery method and indicative timescale
- Usage or licensing terms where relevant
- VAT status, deposit, balance and cancellation terms
- How extra time or additional images would be charged
Compare like for like
Give each photographer the same written brief. If quotes differ, identify whether the difference is experience, production approach, coverage, editing, products or rights. Ask about unclear exclusions before booking; the lowest total is not a saving if it omits something essential.
