Boiler pilot light keeps going out

A pilot light that repeatedly goes out on an older boiler may indicate a flame-sensing, gas-supply, draught or appliance fault and should not be repeatedly relit.

Likely causes

  • Thermocouple or flame-sensing faults, draughts and gas-supply problems are among the possibilities.

Safe checks you can make

  • Note whether other gas appliances are affected and record exactly when the pilot fails.
  • Follow only the manufacturer’s normal user instructions; do not remove the casing.

When to stop and get urgent help

  • If you smell gas, open doors and windows, avoid flames and electrical switches, leave if necessary, and call 0800 111 999.

How a Gas Safe registered engineer can help

  • A Gas Safe registered engineer can test flame supervision, combustion and the gas supply safely.
