No hot water? What to check

No hot water does not always mean the boiler has failed. First establish whether heating is also affected, whether the appliance has power, and whether a clear fault code is displayed.

Checks that do not involve opening the appliance

  • Try more than one hot tap and check whether cold water still runs normally.
  • Check whether central heating works and whether a timer or thermostat setting has changed.
  • Look at the boiler display for a fault code and check the pressure shown.
  • Check your consumer unit only from a safe, dry position. Do not handle electrical controls if they are wet.
  • If you use a hot-water cylinder, check its normal programmed times and controls.

What the pattern may suggest

Hot water and heating failing together can point to a wider loss of power, fuel supply or boiler operation. Heating working while hot water does not may indicate a control, valve, sensor or hot-water-system problem. These are possibilities rather than a diagnosis.

Avoid unsafe investigation

  • Do not remove the boiler cover, work on gas components or bypass safety systems.
  • Do not keep resetting an appliance that repeatedly locks out.
  • If you suspect the gas appliance is unsafe, turn it off and arrange a check by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Useful details for a professional

  • Boiler or cylinder type, make and model
  • Whether heating works
  • Any pressure reading or fault code
  • When the problem began and whether it is intermittent
  • Any recent plumbing, power or boiler work
