Burst pipe: what to do now

If water is escaping quickly, focus on safety and limiting the supply rather than finding the break. Stop the water where you can do so safely, keep clear of electrics, and contact an emergency plumber.

Act safely and limit the flow

  • If you know where the internal stop tap is and can reach it safely, turn it clockwise to shut off the incoming water.
  • If water is near electrical fittings, do not touch wet switches, plugs or equipment. Keep people clear and seek urgent assistance.
  • Open a cold tap after isolating the supply to help drain remaining water from the system.
  • Use containers and towels only where it is safe, and move vulnerable belongings away from the water.

Do not take unnecessary risks

  • Do not enter standing water where electricity may be present.
  • Do not force an inaccessible or seized stop tap.
  • Do not open a boiler or disturb gas appliances while looking for the source.
  • A temporary wrap is not a dependable repair for a burst or split pipe.

Get the right help

Contact an emergency plumber for an uncontrolled leak, a split pipe, water affecting ceilings or electrics, or a supply you cannot isolate. If you rent, notify the landlord or managing agent as soon as possible as well.

  • Say whether the main supply is off
  • Describe where water is appearing and how quickly
  • Mention nearby electrics, boilers or ceilings
  • Share when it started and any freezing or recent work

After the immediate leak

Photograph visible damage if it is safe and keep a note of actions taken. A professional may need to find the damaged section and check surrounding materials before the water is restored.
