Toilet leaking water: finding the source

Dry the visible area if safe, then watch where water first reappears. Water from a supply connection, cistern, pan connector or base needs different attention, so avoid assuming the source from the puddle alone.

Find where water first appears

Check whether it appears only during filling, flushing or all the time.
Look around the supply connection and cistern without removing concealed panels.
Check behind the bowl and around the floor at the base.
Distinguish clean supply water from waste water and keep the area hygienic.

Reduce damage

Stop using the toilet if flushing makes the leak worse. If there is an obvious accessible isolation valve and it operates freely, turn off that toilet’s supply. Do not force a seized valve or disturb a loose toilet.

What the location may suggest

A cistern seal, inlet connection, overflow, flush connection or waste connection can leak. Condensation can also wet a cold cistern. These observations help narrow the inspection but do not confirm the fault.

Arrange prompt help

Call a plumber when water reaches flooring or ceilings, waste water may be escaping, the toilet moves, the supply cannot be isolated, or the leak persists. Share photographs and say exactly when and where water appears.
