Door lock won’t turn: safe things to check
A key that will not turn may be the wrong or damaged key, a misaligned door, a worn cylinder or a failed mechanism; forcing it can snap the key.
Likely causes
- Door movement, pressure on the latch, key wear, debris or internal lock failure can prevent rotation.
Safe checks you can make
- Try a known spare key and gently relieve pressure on the door while turning.
- Stop if the key bends or the lock feels unusually stiff.
When to stop and get urgent help
- Call urgently if someone is locked in, the property cannot be secured or there is immediate danger; use emergency services for threats to life.
How a locksmith can help
- A locksmith can identify whether alignment, cylinder or multipoint mechanism repair is needed.
