Light switch crackling: is it dangerous?

A crackling switch can mean electrical arcing or a loose internal connection and should be taken out of use.

Likely causes

  • Worn contacts, loose wiring or a damaged switch can produce noise and heat.

Safe checks you can make

  • Do not operate the switch again; note any smell, warmth, flicker or discolouration without removing it.

When to stop and get urgent help

  • Isolate the lighting circuit if safe when there is heat, smoke or a burning smell, and seek urgent help.
  • Do not remove the switch or touch wiring.

How a electrician can help

  • A qualified electrician can safely isolate, inspect and test the switch and lighting circuit.
