Socket keeps sparking: what to do

Repeated sparks, scorching or crackling from a socket can indicate a loose connection, damaged accessory or overloaded circuit and should not be ignored.

Likely causes

  • A worn socket, loose connection, damaged plug or fault in the appliance may cause arcing.
  • A tiny flash as some appliances are connected is different from repeated sparking during use.

Safe checks you can make

  • Switch off and unplug the appliance only if it is safe and there is no heat or smoke.
  • Stop using the socket and note whether the plug or faceplate is hot, marked or loose.

When to stop and get urgent help

  • Turn off the circuit at the consumer unit if you can do so safely when there is smoke, burning smell, heat or persistent crackling.
  • Do not remove the faceplate or test exposed wiring.

How a electrician can help

  • A qualified electrician can test the socket, connections, circuit and appliance before replacing damaged parts.
