Why does my fuse box keep tripping?
A consumer unit that repeatedly trips is detecting a fault or overload; repeatedly resetting it without finding the cause can be unsafe.
Likely causes
- A faulty appliance, overloaded circuit, moisture or a wiring fault can operate an RCD or circuit breaker.
Safe checks you can make
- Note which switch trips and what was running at the time.
- Unplug portable appliances on the affected circuit without opening fixed equipment.
When to stop and get urgent help
- Leave the circuit off if it trips immediately, will not reset, smells burnt or serves wet equipment.
- Never hold a breaker on or bypass protective devices.
How a electrician can help
- An electrician can isolate the faulty circuit and carry out insulation, RCD and appliance tests.
