Electrical sockets not working: safe checks
Dead sockets may share a tripped circuit, a faulty protective device or a damaged connection, even when lights elsewhere still work.
Likely causes
- A tripped breaker, failed RCD, faulty socket, damaged appliance or circuit fault may interrupt power.
Safe checks you can make
- From a dry, safe position, note whether neighbouring sockets, lights or other circuits are also affected.
- Do not plug in an appliance that may be faulty, remove socket covers or touch exposed wiring.
When to stop and get urgent help
- Do not reset repeatedly or use a socket that is hot, wet, loose or scorched.
How a electrician can help
- An electrician can trace the affected circuit and test protective devices and connections.
