Moving house checklist
A manageable move starts with an inventory, confirmed access and a realistic timeline. Work backwards from moving day, keeping essentials and important information separate from packed belongings.
Several weeks before
- Build a room-by-room inventory and decide what will not move.
- Compare removal quotes using the same information.
- Plan packing, dismantling, storage and help for children or pets.
- Check access, parking, lifts and restrictions at both properties.
- List organisations and services that will need your updated address.
Approaching moving day
- Confirm timings, addresses, contacts and included services with the mover.
- Label boxes by destination room and mark fragile items clearly.
- Set aside documents, medicines, chargers, keys and moving-day essentials.
- Arrange safe disposal rather than leaving unwanted items until the last moment.
- Photograph valuable items and relevant property condition.
On moving day
- Keep access routes clear and point out fragile or non-moving items.
- Check cupboards, lofts, sheds and outdoor spaces before leaving.
- Keep keys and important documents with you.
- Record agreed meter information and handover details separately.
- Walk through the destination before the crew leaves where practical.
Immediately after
- Check essential furniture and labelled boxes have reached the correct rooms.
- Report visible damage or missing items through the agreed process promptly.
- Locate stop taps, controls and emergency information.
- Unpack essentials before lower-priority belongings.
- Keep inventories, photographs and moving paperwork together.
