Toilet not flushing properly: common reasons
A weak or incomplete flush can involve the cistern mechanism, water level, rim outlets or a developing blockage.
Likely causes
- A faulty button or linkage, low cistern fill, worn flush valve or restricted pan can reduce the flush.
Safe checks you can make
- Watch whether the cistern refills and whether the button feels different.
- Do not repeatedly flush if the bowl level rises.
When to stop and get urgent help
- Stop using it if waste threatens to overflow or other drains begin backing up.
How a plumber can help
- A plumber can inspect the cistern and pan and determine whether drainage clearance is also needed.
